Transcript:

Anchor: Trump tries to read the room — This is WBS News Radio, and it’s 1:15. Senior White House officials tell WBS that President Trump is trying at this moment to decide whether now is a good time to bring up the fact that he, in his opinion, won the state of Georgia in 2020’s presidential election, not even 48 hours after becoming the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice. A recording obtained by WBS from inside the Oval Office captures an exchange between Trump and an unidentified White House aide.

Trump: But I won Georgia. Can’t I say I won Georgia?
Aide: Now is really not the time, Sir.
Trump: Oh, okay. Not the time. Okay. Sure. (slight pause) How about now? Now a good time?
Aide: No, Sir.
Trump: No. Okay.
(slight pause)
Trump: Now?
Aide: Nope.
Trump: What about now?
Aide: Still no.

Anchor: The president went on to ask if there were other ways he might broach the subject.

Trump: What if I say I’m addressing the nation on the virus, the what’s it called–
Aide: Coronavirus, Sir.
Trump: Yeah, Conoravirus. What if I pretend I’m addressing them about that, but I kind of weave in the stuff about Georgia?
Aide: I wouldn’t recommend it, Sir.
Trump: Really? I thought that was a really good idea. (pause) Is it still going on? The Corellavirus?
Aide: Yes, Sir. Yes, it is.
